Jingdezhen Relief Carving with Tiffany Saw
Join Brooklyn-based ceramic artist Tiffany Saw for an immersive workshop exploring the art of Jingdezhen-style relief carving. Tiffany’s work blends American and Chinese throwing techniques with traditional carving methods she studied in Jingdezhen. She meticulously hand-carves intricate flora and fauna designs onto her functional porcelain pieces, achieving delicate and refined details.
This workshop is perfect for ceramic artists looking to deepen their understanding of carving and traditional Chinese decorative techniques. Students will be able to work hands-on. They will follow along step by step on how to sketch, carve, and finish the fine details of Jingdezhen’s shadow-style carving. Tools and reference material will be provided during class.
Rock Clay will supply leather hard cups and plates to the class, but feel free to bring your own leather hard piece to carve, the less grog in the clay body the better. This class does not include firing and glazing, you will do this on your own time.
The following items will be helpful if you want to bring them along: a pin tool, two brushes(one for dry dusting and one for wet brushing your carving), a towel/foam if you want to rest your piece on the table as you carve. If you have a specific image in mind you want to carve please bring a reference photo.
Below are links to the carving tools I use (the next best thing to getting them handmade), in case you want to continue carving after the workshop.
